What makes Miyuki beads so special?
MIYUKI Round Rocaille seed beads are round in shape, extremely uniform and were created by MIYUKI CO. LTD. These seed beads are preferred by most bead artists and are used for peyote, brick stitch, and loom projects which all need uniformity. This shape gives each finished piece a clean surface along with an amazing amount of detail. Miyuki 11/0 seed beads are a cornerstone of the beading world, highly valued for their superior quality and consistency. While the term "Miyuki seed beads" often gets used interchangeably with "Miyuki Delica beads," they are actually two distinct types of beads from the same manufacturer. The key difference lies in their shape. Miyuki seed beads, also known as Miyuki Round Rocaille Seed Beads, or RR for short, are shaped like a tiny doughnut. Now Miyuki Delica's while they are still round, they are cylindrical like a tiny tube and are closely related to a Miyuki Bugle bead which are longer versions of the Delica bead and come in a number of different lengths and styles.
Key Miyuki 11/0 Seed Bead Specifications
1. Shape and Uniformity
- Rounder Shape: Unlike beads from other manufacturers like Czech Beads, Matsuno, or TOHO beads, Miyuki 11/0 seed beads have a classic, slightly rounded "rocaille" shape. While they are not perfectly spherical, they are much more rounded than the perfectly cylindrical Delica beads.
- High Uniformity: Like all Miyuki products, these beads are known for their high degree of consistency in size and shape. This makes them a significant improvement over many other brands of seed beads, which can vary widely in a single batch. This uniformity is crucial for creating professional-looking beadwork with a consistent tension and appearance.
2. Size 11/0 Miyuki Seed Beads
- Standard Sizing: The "11/0" size is the most popular and widely used seed bead size. It's a versatile size that works well for a wide range of projects and beading techniques.
- Dimensions: An 11/0 Miyuki seed bead measures approximately 2mm in diameter, which is slightly larger in diameter than an 11/0 Delica bead (which is about 1.6mm), however they are comparable in overall length when strung.
- Beads per Unit: There are approximately 110 beads per gram, or around 2,640 beads in one of our standard 24-gram Elizabeth Ward bead containers. This number can vary slightly depending upon the elements required to create the bead color and finish. Heavier elements will make some colors heavier than other colors. For instance, white beads are much lighter than black beads due to the minimum number of elements it takes to create a white bead. Therefore, there are more white beads per gram than a black bead. Silk Satin beads, one of the lightest beads manufactured by Miyuki are lighter than most beads because air is introduced into the bead during the manufacturing process creating the amazing effect that Silk Satin beads offer. If you're purchasing your beads in a typical 2" or 6" tube from other resellers, you're not getting what you are paying for. If it says 7.2 or 24 grams, or even 7 or 23 grams, and it's not a white or transparent bead, what you are getting at times is 6.8 grams for Delica's or 22 grams for seed beads or less. This can be far less than what you are expecting, especially since all Miyuki beads are sold by the gram and not by the TUBE. Here at AngularByDesign we weigh every gram that goes into the Elizabeth Ward bead container that we sell. This ensures that you always get what you pay for. EVERY TIME!
3. Hole Size
- Functionality: Miyuki 11/0 seed beads have a larger-than-average hole size compared to other seed beads on the market. This feature allows for multiple passes of a beading needle and thread, which is essential for most bead weaving techniques.
- Thread Capacity: The hole size is large enough to accommodate threads like Fireline, Nymo, and other common beading threads, making them very practical for a wide variety of projects and beading techniques. With the larger hole size, you are able to make multiple passes through the beads for beading techniques like Brick Stitch and Peyote.
